    Attendees will learn about best practices to manage UI issues in their workplace and gain the knowledge about employer rights and responsibilities under UI law. The session is appropriate for business professionls who are new to UI issues as well as those who'd like to discuss specific UI topics in more detail.

    We will cover:

    • How Unemployment Insurance (UI) tax rates are determined
    • How an applicant's benefits eligibility can affect UI tax rates for their former employers
    • What employers can do to prevent unnecessary charges to their UI account
    • Tips to avoid the most common UI mistakes
    • Information on properly classifying a worker as an independent contractor versus an employee
    • Tips on wage detail reporting

    In addition to providing information, we really want to get feedback from attendees and hear what issues and concerns they have regarding the UI program.

    Speakers for this session will be:

    Aaron Tell

    Aaron is a Communications/Outreach Specalist with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development - Unempployment Insurance (UI) Program - for 19 years. Responsibilities include providing education and trianing to employers, people applying to receieve unemployment benefits, and UI staff. Duties also include gathering feedback from UI customers in user-testing sessions and then applying that information along with user-centered design principles to the Self-Service System, correspondence, and the UI website for a better user experience.

    Employer Relations, Unemployment Insurance, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, 6 years of experience in Unemployment Insurance. Former elementary teach and small business owner.
