Why do employers have plan documents? Many employers treat their plan ocument as boilerplate and just an item that needs to get checked off of their to do list. They may not even know why they have to maintain a plan document. The easy anser is that ERISA requires it. However, the plan document should be considered to be the blue print for the employer plan. It will tell the employer who is eligible, under what circumstances and what the benefits are.
